Creating, managing and designing projects to secure federal, state and municipal tax incentives for industrial, technological and social development will be discussed in a new panel on Tax Incentives for Oil Industry Projects organized by the Brazilian Institute for Oil, Gas and Biofuels (IBP) on 22 October, 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, at IBP headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.

The event will also provide a forum for discussing the upcoming suspension of Act 11196/05 (Lei do Bem), which previously granted tax incentives for research and development. The Brazilian Association for Research & Development (ANPEI) will present a manifesto against the government’s decision, with backing from a number of companies in the industry. Other topics will include the Special Customs Framework for Oil & Gas Exploration and Production (REPETRO), introduced in 1999 to promote the development of the oil and gas industry in Brazil, as well as social and cultural tax incentives.

The design of project proposals submitted to the government, and which often are rejected, will be on the discussion agenda. “Many companies are currently unfamiliar with what exactly is eligible for tax incentives. As a result, many innovative projects not conforming to requirements are excluded,” says Carlos Augusto, Head of Social Responsibility at IBP.

A “Handbook on Tax Incentive Regulations – Social Investment Strategies” prepared by FIRJAN’s Social Responsibility Advisory service with support from the SESI National Department will be presented at the event. The handbook is a compilation of information on sports, cultural and social tax incentives under federal and state regulations.
